Obituary of Ing Chang-Ki

From Wikipedia

Ing Chang-ki was born in Cixi City, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in 1914. When he was a young man he served in a bank in Shanghai as a clerk. Later he became a locally famous banker in Shanghai. In 1949 he went to Taipei, and finally became an industry mogul in Taiwan. He created the Ing Foundation for further promotion of Go, while encouraging the use of the name Goe in an attempt to differentiate its name from the English verb go. Until 2000, he sponsored a tournament and substantial prize for computer Go programs known as the Ing Prize.

From EGF-EGCC Newsletter Supplement September 1997

It is with great regret that the European Go Federation announces the recent death of its friend and most generous sponsor, Mr. Ing Chang-Ki. Mr. Ing had been generous not only with financial support for European go, but also with his interest in our activities, especially in promoting competitive go amongst young players.

Mr. Ing's original thinking about the rules of go has caused players throughout the continent to reassess their view of the fundamentals of the game. In many of Europe's go playing countries are to be found the famous Ing go sets and clocks, generously provided by Mr. Ing, which have enabled the Ing rules of go to be adopted in so many tournaments.

There are few go playing communities in Europe which have not been touched by Mr. Ing's munificence, and our debt of gratitude will last long into the future.
