Thanks to sponsorship from the Nikkei Japanese newspaper for several years a team of young players was invited to Japan. This was always in the autumn and tied in with the first match of the Oza professional title match, of which the Nikkei is the sponsor. It was not really an exchange as no Japanese children came to Europe. Originally (prior to 2006) just France were invited to Japan, but latterly three teams were invited each year.
As far as possible the team is made up of the country's high school, junior high and junior school champions. There is in addition a responsible adult leader per team, and also an overall team captain to coordinate and assist the teams.
The countries invited and overall team captain since 2006 were:
2006 | France | Germany | Netherlands | Frank Janssen |
2007 | Czechia | Germany | UK | Jana Hricova |
2008 | France | Romania | Netherlands | Ion Florescu |
2009 | France | Germany | UK | Catalin Taranu |
