Google DeepMind announced the non profit recipients of the $1 million prize fund today!

Google DeepMind announced the non profit recipients of the $1 million prize fund from the AlphaGo vs Lee Sedol tournament today.

The fund will be split between UNICEF UK, Raspberry Pi/Code Club, the American Go Association, the European Go Federation and the Korean Baduk (Go) Association.

Demis Hassabis, Co-Founder and CEO, Google DeepMind said: “We hoped that the success of AlphaGo would inspire interest in Go and technology around the world. From the beauty and creativity of the moves played in the match, to sellouts of Go boards, interest has been surging in professional, amateur and junior players alike, and is great to see!”

From the fund, the European Go Federation will get $150.000.
EGF is very happy and thankful for the support of Google DeepMind!

Goals for EGF:
Develop the EGF’s Professional System by:

  • Holding a Professional Championship for the next three years (first one happened 2016 in St. Petersburg)
  • Extending the existing Grand Prix (more top-tournaments, new final event similar to Tennis)
  • Supporting Young Players
  • Improving awareness of Go in Europe
