For the first time ever, the World Youth Goe Championship took place in Germany. It was the 35th Championship of its kind, and it was for the seventh time in Europe.
Alltogether 22 players from East and South East Asia, America and Europe played five rounds in two categories Under-16 and Under-12, and the best four played out the championship in semifinals and finals. The winners of both sections came from China: Lǐ Zéruì (1p, Under-16) and Xiào Zébīn (6d, Under-12). During the medieval farewell banquet, both winners were knighted by the jester of the castle.
Best Europeans were Solal Zemor (5th in Under-16) from France and Olesia Malko (6th in Under-12) from Ukraine.
Stahleck Castle is an old castle in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, which is a Unesco World Heritage site. Besides playing the World Championship, the children enjoyed many activities such as archery, abseiling from the castle walls, or riding on a sommerrodelbahn (Alpine slide) down the famous Loreley rock as well as playing friendly matches and relay go with young players from Germany.
