Even after two whole years, the impact of AlphaGo has not ceased to resonate. Hochhaus Herrengasse has taken special interest and erected a monument to commemorate AlphaGo’s historic victory against Lee Sedol 9p. Its embodiment in the form of nine gigantic black stones can be found in the very centre of Vienna, Austria. (See previous article.)

The AlphaGo sculpture in Vienna is the first monument in the world that is dedicated to AI. It has become a must-see landmark for go players visiting Vienna. Those who have seen it have surely noticed its lack of white stones. This will finally be amended this week: The AlphaGo sculpture will be completed with three additional white stones!

The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday 30 August at 10:00 and be graced with the presence of Robert Trappel (Austria’s leading expert on AI), Gregor Eichinger (who designed the monument) and Wolfgang Spitzy (the initiator of the project).

If you happen to be in the vicinity on the 30th of August, it is definitely worth paying a visit to the event.
In order to celebrate the opening of the completed AlphaGo sculpture, the best players of Europe have been invited to compete in a new tournament sponsored by Hochhaus Herrengasse:
Pavol Lisy 2p, Ilya Shikshin 2p, Ali Jabarin 2p and Mateusz Surma 1p, in a repeat performance of the 2018 European Championship finals, will compete in a knock-out tournament for a prize pool of close to 4000€. The winner will also be awarded with a special trophy crafted by Gregor Eichinger himself.

The rounds of the 1st Hochhaus Herrengasse Cup are scheduled on 30 August at 11:00 and 14:00, in Panoramaraum, the highest event location in Vienna with a magnificent view over the historical city centre.  You can follow the games live on KGS. On-site visitors will also be able to enjoy live commentary of the games and a go buffet!

Is it only the 4 of them or there is a side tournament for the "general public"?
