Wichard von Alvensleben won play-off v Ciessow

The fifth European Go Congress took place in the first two weeks of August, in Baden close to Vienna. It was the Congress with the most participants till then, over a hundred. Even more noteworthy of this anniversary Congress was the visit of 9 dans Segoe and Hashimoto, who came from Japan.

The tournament for the European Championship was very exciting. Wichard von Alvensleben and Günter Ciessow both finished first and there had to be a playoff. This game, with both players in heavy time trouble, was won by Von Alvensleben by two points.
Von Alvensleben, at that time 24 and a law student in Göttingen, was promoted to 2d after the Congress.
