Around 130 players participated in the 19th European Go Congress in Krems, not far from Vienna, along the Danube. For the first time there were participants from Poland, Greece and Italy.
12 players were in the Championship Group and the first round started directly with a cracker between the undoubtely strongest players of that time, Mattern and Wimmer. Jürgen Mattern won this and he became for the seventh time European Champion with eight wins out of eight games. With this win he earned a ticket to Japan.

The Master Tournament was played in four groups. The winners of the four groups had to play a knock-out final to decide the winner.

In the play-off for group D, Hungerink beat Barisic, and Beck beat Hungerink.
Semi-finals: Hasibeder beat Faye; Zemb beat Beck
Final: Zemb beat Hasibeder
The Challengers Tournament, which also was played in four groups, was won by Kuhar (Yug, 1k). He beat Ralph Hempfling (Ger, 1k) in the final.
Bruce Wilcox, a pioneer in computer Go, gave a lecture in programming computer Go. He was claiming that his program, which would be ready in two and half years, could solve 1 dan problems.
The Nihon Ki-in sent a group of twenty amateur players, headed by Kobayashi Chizu (4p), to the Congress. They played a match Europe-Asia, which was won by Europe (13-7).
