In 1976 the Congress returned to the UK, this time in Cambridge.
Iwamoto Kaoru was present the first few days of the Congress, with a public game commentary on the second game of the Honinbo Match between Ishida and Takemiya as highlight of his visit.
Patrick Merissert became the first French European Champion. In the championship's Tournament he finished together with Tony Goddard on the first place. Merissert won the deciding play-off.

This year the usual Masters and other tournaments were replaced by one Main Tournament, paired with the MacMahon-system. In the first division (2-3 dan) was a three-way tie for the first place. Matthew Macfadyen (Gbr, 3d) won the tie-break on SOS-points and qualified for 1977 European Championship.

This year there was for the first time mention of a Weekend Tournament and a Rengo Tournament.
