After the last edition in Brno in 2023, won by Jan Šimara 1p, the Pro Qualification returned this year to Vienna with a new format: a round-robin tournament (everyone plays everyone) featuring 12 players. It was a long and stressful journey for both the audience and, most of all, the players (or perhaps, in the end, more for the audience).

After several days of intense battles, unexpected upsets, and outstanding performances, the 11-round event finally crowned its winner: Benjamin Dréan-Guénaïzia 7d 🇫🇷.
As the 10th round concluded with crucial wins and losses, multiple possible outcomes faded away. With his victory in round 10 against Lukáš Podpěra 7d 🇨🇿, the French champion was sure to become the new EGF Pro!

Congratulation to Benjamin Dréan-Guénaïzia 1p 🇫🇷  for joining the ranks of the EGF pros!

His impressive achievements over the past years - becoming European Champion in 2022, defeating professional players countless times, and winning numerous titles - have finally paid off. Benjamin demonstrated incredible strength throughout this tournament, proving he truly belongs among the pros.

The event showcased many high-level games, some nearly flawless, highlighting the bright future of European Go and its potential for further growth!
Notably, the young talent Vsevolod Ovsiienko 6d 🇺🇦, the last player to qualify, impressed both participants and spectators by going head-to-head with top contenders and holding his ground in the tournament’s toughest matches.

Final results

The youngest of the tournament, Vsevolod and Yuze, both under 18, playing round 10 together.

Lucas and Rémi about to start another potential decisive game for Rémi.

All six games per round were broadcast live on gogameslive.eu, OGS, and IGS, thanks to IZIS boards. You can find the game records, results, and reviews on the dedicated tournament page and on the EGF’s Twitch Channel.

All games were commented on Twitch. Here Fredrik 7d and Elian 6d reviewing the epic game.

Everyone is now eager to see Benjamin take on the professional Go world, especially his many students, who can now proudly say they have a pro teacher, and the French Go community, now armed with two professional players. Even Hungarian fans can celebrate Benjamin’s success, as he is also an active part of their Go scene.

Stay tuned for a future article where we’ll share more about Benjamin!
In the meantime… let’s celebrate!! Congratulations again!
